Cougars split at home against Lumberjacks

MORRIS, Minn. - Sophomore pitcher Michael Head gave Minnesota Morris a phenomenal effort on the mound as his complete game performance helped earn the Cougars a split Saturday in a UMAC baseball doubleheader against Northland at the Cougar Diamond.

Game 1: NC 7, UMM 4
After allowing two first-inning runs, the Cougars would score two in the third to even the game. With the bases loaded, Blaise Fairbanks knocked in a run with an infield single. Nash Kramer followed with an RBI single to right to plate Bryce Jergenson. Starting pitcher Sam Melchior kept Northland off the board from the second-fourth innings, but the Lumberjacks put up three in the fifth to retake the lead. UMM scored on a pair of wild pitches to cut the lead to 5-4 in the eighth. Northland scored two insurance runs in the ninth to claim the three-run win. Jackson Gessell went 3-for-5 with a triple. Fairbanks added two hits.

Game 2: UMM 4, NC 2
Head picked up his third win on the mound this season in collecting his first career complete game. He allowed only five hits and one earned run while striking out three. He lowered his season earned-run-average to 4.25. UMM scored an unearned run in the first to take the lead. In the fourth, Kramer's RBI single to left scored Nick Peterson to make it 2-0 Cougars. Kramer delivered another RBI single in the sixth to score Peterson again to give UMM a 3-1 lead. In the seventh, Bryce Jergenson hit a one-out double to left. Two batters later, Thomas Eckstein drove him in with a single to left. Head retired the Lumberjacks in order in the ninth, striking out the last two batters to preserve the win. Peterson went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Blake Haugen added a double.
