ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The UMN Morris women's basketball team (1-2) fell to Saint Benedict (2-0), 61-52, Friday evening at the St. Benedict Tournament. The Bennies outscored the Cougars 34-21 in the second half to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lexus Eagle Chasing hit a 3-pointer with 5:08 to go in the first quarter to give the Cougars an early 12-2 lead.
- With nine seconds left in the first quarter, Abby Van Kempen connected on a layup to secure a 20-11 lead for the Cougars heading into the second quarter.
- After trailing 26-15 with 6:26 to play in the first half, St. Ben's was able to cut the deficit to four points at 31-27 heading into halftime.
- With 5:58 to play in the third quarter, the Bennies took their first lead of the game at 41-39.
- Ben's used a 21-13 third quarter to take a 48-44 lead over the Cougars into the fourth quarter.
- Mia Wassink scored back-to-back baskets to give the Cougars a 50-49 lead over St. Ben's, but the Bennies responded with a 12-2 run down the stretch to secure the victory.
NOTABLES
- Van Kempen led the Cougars in points (16) and rebounds (nine).
- Along with Van Kempen's 16 points, Eagle Chasing chipped in 13 points and Wassink had 12 points.
- Becca Holland and A. Van Kempen led the Cougars with four assists apiece.
- Three Cougars recorded three steals to lead the team (A. Van Kempen, Ella Van Kempen and Wassink).
- The Cougars shot 50 percent from the field during the first half.
