GREENVILLE, Ill. – Trailing by 21 points heading into the fourth quarter, the UMN Morris football team (1-9, 1-7 UMAC) rallied back but ultimately dropped a 34-33 decision at Greenville (8-2, 7-1 UMAC) Saturday afternoon to close out the 2019 season. With 1:01 left in regulation, the Cougars scored on a 1-yard touchdown run but were unable to secure the two-point conversion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Greenville got on the scoreboard first with 12:06 to play in the first quarter as Paul Garrett scored on a 52-yard run.
- Following the Greenville touchdown, the Cougars scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 13-7 lead.
- The first Cougar touchdown of the day saw Drew Shipley run from three yards out to tie the game with 9:00 left on the clock in the first quarter.
- With 5:55 remaining in the first quarter, Shipley found Cameron Geyer for a 10-yard touchdown pass, but the Cougars were unable to make the PAT.
- Greenville then responded with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 21-13 lead over the Cougars with 1:42 left in the first quarter.
- Then Garrett added a touchdown run in the second and third quarters to give the Panthers a 34-13 lead.
- The Cougars were able to begin their comeback bid with Shipley finding Geyer once again for 16-yards to make it 34-20 with 8:46 left.
- Then with 3:19 left in regulation, Shipley found Geyer for a 10-yard touchdown pass to bring the Cougars within a touchdown.
- Shipley then rushed for his second touchdown of the game – this time for 1-yard – to make it 34-33 with 1:10 to play.
- Following the Cougar touchdown, the UMN Morris offense went for two and weren't able to convert.
NOTABLES
- Shipley accounted for five touchdowns on the afternoon (three passing, two rushing).
- Shipley was 26-for-50 for 254 yards and three touchdowns.
- Geyer had seven catches for 65 yards and a career-best three touchdowns.
- Joseph Loija led the Cougars with 12 tackles (eight solo, four assists).
- Tyler Borschnack recorded 11 tackles on the afternoon (four solo, seven assists).
