Cougars Conclude Season

Northwestern defeats UMN Morris in three sets Saturday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 2-seeded UMN Morris volleyball team (16-12) closed out its 2019 season with a three-set loss (25-23, 25-16, 25-20) at No. 1-seeded Northwestern (24-8) in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship match Saturday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams kept things close in the first set as the largest lead was three points at 8-5 in favor of Northwestern. Late in the first set, the Eagles went on a 4-1 run to secure the 25-23 victory in the opening set.
     
  • In the second set, Northwestern used a 6-0 run to take a 14-7 lead over the Cougars. UMN Morris brought things within three points at 15-12, ­­the Eagles went on a 10-4 run to tally a 25-16 win in set two.
     
  • The Eagles finished off the sweep of the Cougars with a 25-20 victory in the third set.
NOTABLES
  • Hannah Godzala, Layne Herrmann, and Morgan Miller closed out their careers donning the Maroon & Gold.
     
  • Tori Everson led the Cougars with nine kills and 11 digs.
     
  • Hermann finished the evening with 24 assists and 10 digs.
     
  • Hermann closed out her career with a school record 4,502 assists.
     
  • Miller finished out career with 1,029 kills, which ranks seventh in school history, and 396 blocks, which ranks third in school history.
