Cougars Win UMAC Opener

Women’s basketball defeats Northland, 80-68

MORRIS, Minn. – The UMN Morris women's basketball team (4-4, 1-0 UMAC) opened UMAC play with an 80-68 victory over Northland (2-5, 0-2 UMAC) Saturday afternoon inside the Cougar Sports Center. Mia Wassink led the Cougars with a 20-point outing.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars opened up the game outscoring the LumberJills by a margin of 6-1 over the first 4:14 of play.
  • With the first quarter in the books, the Cougars led the LumberJills, 18-13.
  • Northland responded to the Cougars with a 6-0 run to open the second quarter to take a 19-18 lead.
  • The second quarter saw UMN Morris use a18-2 run to take a 36-21 lead with 3:21 to go in the first half.
  • After 20 minutes of play, the Cougars led the LumberJills, 40-28.
  • During the third quarter, Northland outscored UMN Morris 21-18 to cut the deficit to nine points at 58-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, the LumberJills were able to bring the game within seven points but the Cougars built their lead to 19 points with 2:33 to play at 80-61.

NOTABLES

  • Maddie Fenske scored a career-best 14 points. Along with her 14 points she had nine rebounds.
  • The Cougars were 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the second half.
  • UMN Morris outscored Northland by a margin of 48-22 in the paint.
