FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team (8-3) went 2-1 on the day against Brockport and Crown.
After falling to Crown, 4-2, the Cougars defeated Brockport, 3-2, and then topped Crown in six innings, 13-5.
Game One Recap
The Crown Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Cougars in the bottom of the first inning. Crown then added another two runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0 over Minnesota Morris.
After a two-out single from Becca Holland, Megan Knickerbocker hit a two-run home run, her third home run of the season, to bring the Cougars within two in the sixth inning.
Crown was able to keep the Cougars off the board in the seventh inning to pick up the 4-2 victory.
Game Two Recap
After a scoreless two innings to start the game, the Cougars got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. A single to left center field from Lacey Sullivan brought home Knickerbocker from second base for the first run of the game. Then in the following at-bat, Marissa Allen doubled to left center field to score Sullivan.
The Cougars held their 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth when Allen connected on her second home run of her career to put the Maroon and Gold in front by three. Allen's home run was crucial, because the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 3-2.
With a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, freshman Mollie Dummer shut the door on the Golden Eagles to secure the complete game victory. In the game, Dummer struck out two and allowed just two hits in seven innings of work.
Game Three Recap
The Cougars pounced on Crown early in the game as they scored five runs during the bottom of the first inning. Sullivan got things going with her two-RBI single to put the Cougars up 2-0. Minnesota Morris then added RBI from Allen, Emily Nordquist and Holland to make it 5-0 after one inning.
Minnesota Morris then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 5-0. For the Cougars in the inning, Allen and Morgan Mathews both recorded RBI.
Crown chipped away at the Cougars lead with three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth, though Minnesota Morris got three runs back in the fifth.
In the fifth inning, Kallie Wycoff doubled to pick up two RBI and then Sullivan doubled in the next at-bat to score Wycoff.
With a 10-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, Jasmine Jensen hit a three-run homer to give the Cougars the 13-5 victory.
On the mound for the Cougars, Dummer struck out a pair, walked one and allowed three hits to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Minnesota Morris will take on Crown on Thursday, March 21, at 9 a.m. (EDT)
