KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team (8-6) recorded a pair of losses on Friday. The Cougars dropped a 23-1 decision to Bethel (12-1) before falling to Plattsburgh State (5-7), 12-0. Prior to Friday's games, the Cougars lost an 11-10 contest to Crown (4-10) in eight innings on Thursday.
Bethel Recap (Five Innings)
Bethel got on the scoreboard early in the game with a pair of runs in the first. The Royals then rattled off 18 runs in the second and then three runs in the fourth.
Minnesota Morris scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Haley Smith recorded a pinch-hit double to right field to score Carly Mahoney.
Plattsburgh State Recap (Five Innings)
Plattsburgh State scored five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back against the Cougars. The Cardinals then added two runs in the second before scoring five more times in the third.
Crown Recap (Eight Innings)
After the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Storm scored twice in the bottom of the second and five times in the third to extend their lead to 7-1.
Minnesota Morris then went on to score five runs in the top of the fifth to bring the game within one, but Crown responded once again with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Trailing 10-6 heading into their final at-bats, the Cougars scored four times to tie things up at 10-10. After Crown was unable to win the game in the home half of the seventh, the game went to extra innings.
Minnesota Morris was unable to plate home a run in the top of the eighth and Crown took advantage of the opportunity to win. In the bottom of the eighth, Laryssa Vik doubled to right field to score Zoe Roberts and secure the win for the Storm.
The 2019 spring break trip continues for the Cougars on Saturday, March 23. Minnesota Morris will play Union at 9:45 a.m. (EDT) and then Colby at 2 p.m. (EDT)
