Softball Splits Saturday Games

Cougars fall to Union, 7-4; defeat Colby, 6-4

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Cougar softball team (9-7) continued its spring break trip with a loss and a win on Saturday. Minnesota Morris opened the day with a 7-4 loss to Union (1-0) before capturing a 6-4 win over Colby (0-2).

Union Recap

Union took an early lead over the Cougars with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Cougars then responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second to tie things up at 2-2. For Minnesota Morris in the second, Megan Knickerbocker picked up two RBI on a single.

With the game still tied at 2-2 heading into the top of the fourth, freshman Jasmine Jensen hit her second home run of the season to put the Cougars in front, 3-2.

Union then used a five-run fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead over Minnesota Morris.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the top of the seventh, freshman Marissa Allen tallied her third home run of the year to make it a 7-4 contest with two outs. Union was then able to get the final out of the game and secure the 7-4 victory.

Colby Recap

Like the Union game, the Cougars fell into an early deficit to Colby, as Colby scored three times in the top of the first. Minnesota Morris then got back a run in the bottom of the second following an RBI from Becca Holland.

Minnesota Morris then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run inning. The Cougars scored an RBI in three straight at-bats from Kallie Wycoff, Allen and Lydia Mann. Madison Langrehr capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single.

Colby brought the score within one at 5-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Cougars were able to add an insurance run on a double from Allen in the sixth.

Following a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, the Cougars were able to strand the runner with three straight outs to tally the 7-4 win.

Freshman Grace Penke struck out one in five innings of work to pick up her fourth win of her career.

The Cougars close out the 2019 spring break trip against Wisconsin-River Falls and Wisconsin-Stout on Sunday, March 24. The Cougars will play Wisconsin-River Falls at 9:30 a.m. (EDT) before taking on Wisconsin-Stout at 11:45 a.m. (EDT)
