Ashland, Wis. - The Minnesota Morris softball team (15-15, 6-6 UMAC) bounced back from yesterdays losses to sweep their doubleheader against the Jills of Northland (6-18, 4-8 UMAC).
Game 1 Recap
The Cougars got the scoring starting right away in the first when
Marissa Allen singled driving in
Megan Knickerbocker for the first run of the game. The Jills would get one run in the bottom of the first to even the score going into the second. In the second frame the Jills would add another run, but the Cougars not to be outdone put up three runs in the top of the third when back to back singles by
Emily Nordquist would bring in
Marissa Allen and
Morgan Mathews would drive home
Michelle O'Rourke. After a stolen base and another single by
Lydia Mann a wild pitch would allow Mathews to cross the plate giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead.
The fourth inning would see Morris score four more runs to open their lead 8-2.
Marissa Allen would again open the scoring with a double that would score
Kallie Wycoff, another wild pitch by the Jills pitcher would give Allen the chance to make it home. On the next play
Lydia Mann would get a single to drive home O'Rourke. The Coguars would strike again with two more runs in the fifth when Knickerbocker would score off the bat of Allen and O'Rourke would score off a defensive error by the Jills, in the seventh
Madison Kugler-Hoekstra would reach on an error and score on a pop out by Allen. The Cougar defense would give up one run in the fifth and one in the seventh to take game one 11-4.
Both
Kallie Wycoff and
Marissa Allen would lead the team with three hits each while Allen would have three RBI's.
Game 2 Recap
In the second game of the day both teams would put their offenses on display scoring 39 total runs. The Cougars would come out on top with a final score of 21-18. In the first inning the Cougars would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead starting with
Kallie Wycoff bring
Megan Knickerbocker home on a single. The Jills however would answer back in the bottom of the first scoring four runs to tie the game going into the second. The Cougars were quiet in the second and third while the Jills got four more runs in both to take the lead 12-4 heading into the fourth. In the top of the fourth Wycoff would again put the ball in play and Knickerbocker would score on an error, the scoring would continue until the Cougars put a nine runs.
The Jills felling the pressure would get three runs in the fourth to keep the lead 15-13, in the top of the fifth
Lacey Sullivan would get on base with a single and then score on a wild pitch two batters later and would keep that going until they had rattled off four runs to grab the lead again. They would see that lead turn into a tie as Northland would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to keep pace.
Morgan Mathews would get things going in the seventh with a lead off double and with Wycoff hitting a single Mathews would score to again take a lead 18-17 but again the Jills not to be outdone got one run to tie the game and force the game into the eighth inning.
As the eight inning got going the Cougars would watch Mathews take one for the team which would bring in the
Emily Nordquist, a wild pitch on the batter would score Sullivan and a sacrifice fly by Wycoff would bring in
Becca Holland for the final run of the game as the Cougars win the second game 21-18. The Cougars would be lead by
Kallie Wycoff as she would cross the plate four times on four hits and seven RBI's.
The Cougars will be back in action as they host the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, April 23 first pitch at 3:30.
