NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team (7-20) played the Carleton Knights (11-18) three times on Sunday afternoon with the Knights going 2-1 on the day.
The first game of the afternoon was a continuation of a game from March 31 with Carleton winning 8-5 in eight innings. Then Carleton tallied a 6-5 eight-inning victory in game two, before the Cougars won the third game of the day, 10-6.
Game One Recap (8-5 Carleton - Eight Innings)
Play resumed for the two teams in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied at 5-5. The tie game didn't last long as Carleton scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take the 8-5 lead. UMN Morris was unable to respond in the home half of the inning giving Carleton the victory.
Game Two Recap (6-5 Carleton - Eight Innings)
The second game of the day saw Carleton strike first with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth, the Cougars rattled off five runs to jump out to a 5-1 lead. For the Cougars in the fifth, Josh Doss and Levi Jahnke tallied back-to-back singles to make it a 2-1 game in favor of UMN Morris.
Later in the fifth, with the bases loaded, Alex Baumann drew a walk to bring home Doss.
The Cougars then picked up another two runs on a sacrifice fly to center field from Brady Jergenson and a single through the left side from Nick Peterson.
Despite trailing 5-1 after five innings, the Knights chipped away at the Cougar lead with two runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and then eventually the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
In relief of Brian Vanyo, who allowed just one run in three innings, Garret Gregersen struck out four and didn't allow an earned run in three innings of work.
For the Cougar offense in game one, five batters tallied an RBI, which included Doss hitting 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game Three Recap (10-6 - Minnesota Morris)
After a scoreless first inning, Carleton plated three runs in the second to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team. UMN Morris then scored five runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead over the Knights.
For the Cougars in the third, Julien Shadle singled to right field to score Baumann and Mack O'Neil. Then later in the inning, Shadle scored on a balk to tie the game at 3-3. UMN Morris then scored a run on a wild pitch in back-to-back at-bats to take the 5-3 lead.
The fourth saw the Cougars score two more runs, but the Knights countered with three runs in the home half of the inning to bring the game within one at 7-6.
UMN Morris then added two runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh to secure the 10-6 victory.
In the final game of the day, O'Neil, Tyler Rowland and Shadle paced the Cougar offense as they all went 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, April 30, for a doubleheader against Northwestern at Cougar Diamond. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
