Baseball Drops Heartbreaking Series to Wisconsin-Superior

Yellowjackets top Cougars, 10-8 in 11 innings and 9-8

MORRIS, Minn. – The UMN Morris baseball team (8-23, 5-11 UMAC) dropped a pair of heartbreaking games to the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets (15-18, 9-7 UMAC) on Saturday afternoon. Wisconsin-Superior topped Minnesota Morris, 10-8 in 11 innings, and 9-8. With the loss in the opener, the Cougars were eliminated from the UMAC Tournament.

Game One Recap
The two teams battled throughout the opener with Wisconsin-Superior striking first with a run in the top of the third. Then after the Yellowjackets scored twice in the top of the fourth, the Cougars got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After a wild pitch brought home Brady Jergenson, Blake Haugen doubled down the right field line to score Nick Peterson from third. The Yellowjackets then got a run back in the fifth to bring the score to 4-2.

The score remained at 4-2 until the top of the eighth when Wisconsin-Superior added another run.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the home half of the eighth, the Cougars took the lead with four runs of their own. A Jergenson single down the left field line scored Baumann and Mack O'Neil to bring the Cougars within one at 5-4. After an RBI single from Peterson to tie things up at 5-5, a sac fly from Haugen put the Cougars in front at 6-5.

The Yellowjackets wouldn't go away quietly in the top of the ninth as they scored three times to take an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars tallied an RBI in back-to-back at-bats as Baumann doubled to left center and then Fairbanks tied the game at 8-8 on a single through the right side.

After a scoreless 10th inning, the Yellowjackets scored twice in the 11th and held the Cougars off the board to secure the 10-8 win.

Game Two Recap
The second game of the twin bill opened up with Fairbanks tallying an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

After the Yellowjackets tied the game at 1-1 in the top of third, Fairbanks hit a homer to right field to put the Cougars up 3-1 after three. O'Neil then added to the Cougar lead with an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the fourth.

Wisconsin-Superior then battled back with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. With the sun setting, the game was moved to Chizek Field after five innings of play.

At Chizek Field, Wisconsin-Superior added a run a in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to build a 9-4 lead over the Cougars.

Trailing 9-4 heading into the home half of the eighth, the Cougars rattled off four runs to bring the game at 9-8.

For the Cougars in the bottom of the eighth, an error led to pair of runs and then the inning was capped off by Julien Shadle hitting a two-run homer to left field.

In the bottom of the ninth, O'Neil led things off with a double to left center and then two batters later, Fairbanks doubled to left field, but the Cougars were unable to bring home the runners, securing the 9-8 win for the Yellowjackets.

The Cougars close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Carleton on Sunday, May 5. First pitch is set for noon. Sunday will be Senior Day for the Cougars.
