Cougars Drop Nail-Biter

Crown defeats men’s basketball, 74-73

MORRIS, Minn. – The UMN Morris men's basketball team (7-15, 3-10 UMAC) fought to the final whistle but missed a pair of go-ahead baskets late as they fell 74-73 to Crown (8-13, 6-7 UMAC) Wednesday night at the Cougar Sports Center. Dillon Haider led the Cougar offense with 20 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Crown scored the first four points of the game and held a lead for the first 9:58 of play.
     
  • Trailing 21-20, Corbyn Alexander hit a 3-pointer to give the Cougars their first lead of the game with 10:02 remaining in the opening half.
     
  • Zack Bubany then capped off an 8-0 run for UMN Morris with a 3-pointer of his own to make 26-21.
     
  • The two teams kept things close down the stretch of the first half as Crown took a 43-39 lead into halftime.
     
  • The second half saw the Storm never relinquish their lead over the Cougars, but UMN Morris never let the deficit get past eight points.
     
  • After trailing 74-67 with 2:21 to go, a Kenneth Riley 3-pointer, followed by a three-point play from Ian Carlin brought the Cougars to within one with 44 seconds remaining.
     
  • Despite scoring 38 points on the night, Timothy missed a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left setting up a pair of looks for the Cougars.
     
  • In the closing seconds, Nick Peterson had a look at a 3-pointer, followed by a jumper from Riley, but both shot attempts did not fall.

NOTABLES

  • Haider was 4-for-10 from the 3-pointer, he is now four 3-pointers shy of setting the school record for 3-pointers in a season (73).
     
  • Freshman Corbyn Alexander tallied 10 points and five rebounds on the evening.
     
  • Freshman Jaret Johnson led the Cougars in rebounds with 10, and tallied nine points.
     
  • The Cougars hit nine 3-pointers in the first half.
     
  • Nick Peterson played in his 100th career game Wednesday night.
     
  • With the loss, the Cougars have been eliminated from the UMAC Tournament.

The Cougars head to Duluth, Minnesota, to take on St. Scholastica on Saturday, Feb. 15. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
