DULUTH, Minn. – The UMN Morris women's basketball team (14-9, 9-5 UMAC) tallied an 88-87 victory over St. Scholastica (9-15, 7-8 UMAC) in double overtime Saturday. With the win, the Cougars have a clinched a berth in the 2020 UMAC Tournament. Mia Wassink led the Cougars with a career-best 22-point outing, including a pair of clutch free throws at the end of the second overtime period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints opened the game scoring the first five points of the contest, but the Cougars responded with an 8-1 run to make it a 9-8 contest.
- After the first 10 minutes of action, St. Scholastica held a 16-12 lead over UMN Morris.
- The second quarter saw St. Scholastica bring its lead to eight over the Cougars at 22-14, but UMN Morris once again brought the game within one point at 27-26.
- St. Scholastica then scored the final five points of the first half to take a 31-26 lead into halftime.
- The Cougars finally took their first lead of the game as Abby Van Kempen connected on a layup to make it 33-31 with 7:03 remaining in the third.
- The UMN Morris lead didn't last long as St. Scholastica made it a 40-36 contest with 4:36 left in the quarter.
- The two teams continued to trade baskets and with 10 minutes to play in regulation, the score was tied at 46-all.
- The fourth quarter opened up with Jay Kwateh put the Cougars up by two on a pair of free throws.
- Following the Kwateh free throws, the Cougars woudn't take the lead back for the remainder of regulation.
- Trailing by two with 14 seconds left in regulation, Jadyn Sondrol came up with a clutch steal giving possession back to the Cougars.
- With just six seconds to go in regulation, Wassink made a layup to tie things up at 69-all.
- The Saints had a chance for the win, but Alison Huber's 3-pointer was no good sending the game to overtime tied at 69.
- Unlike the end of regulation, the final seconds of the first overtime saw the Cougars up by two after a made 3-pointer from Lexus Eagle Chasing with 17 seconds to go.
- Down by two with four seconds left, Morgan Anderson made a pair of free throws to send the game into a second overtime period.
- The Cougars opened up the second overtime period as Eagle Chasing made four straight free throws to give the Cougars a 79-75 lead.
- Down by one with 13 seconds to play in overtime period No. 2, Wassink was fouled and she was able to make both free throws to put the Cougars in front.
- Similar to the end of regulation, Huber had a look from 3-point range, but her shot was no good giving the Cougars the 88-87 win.

- Wassink has scored at least 20 points in back-to-back games.
- Van Kempen tallied 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds - her sixth double-double of the season, and tied a career-best seven blocked shots.
- Van Kempen moved into fourth all-time at UMN Morris in rebounds (923).
- The Cougars were a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the second overtime period.
