MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team put Crown College on its heels right from the start of the match on Tuesday and cruised to a 5-0 victory. Monica Calderon notched a hat trick as part of a 37-shot effort from the Cougar offense, including 23 shots on target. The win improves UMN Morris to 3-8-0 (3-3-0 UMAC). 

The opening minutes of the game featured heavy one-way traffic in front of the Crown goal. BeBe Say had four shots that forced a save from Sidney Manske in the opening 15 minutes, with Calderon and Caroline O'Donnell also forcing a save from Manske in the early going.

The stalemate was broken in the 22nd minute as Kim Peters drove in on goal and was taken down from behind in the 18-yard box to earn Minnesota Morris a penalty. Calderon coolly put it away to make it 1-0.

Not long after that, Say had another shot that nearly resulted in a goal, hitting the crossbar in the 31st minute. Say combined with Calderon in the 36th minute to provide Peters with a breakaway opportunity that the freshman tucked away to make it 2-0 at the break.

Minnesota Morris added a third in the opening minute of the second half. Off of a goal kick, Emma Giere headed nicely to Calderon who was left unmarked and she finished her second of the day to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Calderon finished her hat trick in the 54th minute as Hannah Pedderson slid a through ball ahead to Calderon and she blasted a shot off the hands of Manske and in to increase the margin to 4-0.

The Cougars finished the scoring in the 57th minute as Sydney Lendway lofted a shot over Manske's head from the edge of the 18-yard box for the senior's first career goal.

The final half-hour of the match was controlled by Minnesota Morris, who possessed and moved forward at will. Crown did not offer much in the way of attack, though Bernadette Cienik did well to preserve the shutout with a punched save of a high shot from Ashley Pierce in the 69th minute and again in the 83rd minute.

Cienik ended with three saves to get the first Cougar shutout of the season. Say had nine shots in the match, five of which were on goal and two of which hit the crossbar. Calderon also had nine shots, seven of which were on target. Giere ended with six shots (five on goal) and Peters had four. 

Minnesota Morris will go on the road for five straight matches beginning on Friday with a trip to face the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. First kick for that match is at 1 p.m.
