ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team went to overtime for the second time this season against the University of Northwestern. Unfortunately, this time around, the Eagles were able to come away the winners after a red card in the second half left the Cougars a man down. A golden goal from Jonathan-Thomas Olsen proved to be the difference in a 2-1 UNW win.

The first half overwhelmingly favored Northwestern, but the match went to halftime goalless. Carter Watkinson had the opening shot of the match in the fifth minute which was saved by Austin Gunkel. That was the only shot mustered by the Cougars in the first 45 minutes. UNW had 12 shots, but only two that were on target and saved by Lucas Harmon.

The scoring was opened by Carver Hammond in the 54th minute as some confusion in the Northwestern defense allowed him an opportunity to convert and put Minnesota Morris on top, 1-0. That lead held until there were about 15 minutes left. On a free kick for Northwestern, contact was made on Harmon and Preston Wachter reacted to it with a red-card offense that gave the Eagles a penalty kick. That was converted by Alejandro Alfaro to knot the score at 1-1 and send the match to an extra session.

Northwestern had three shots go off target in the first overtime until Olsen possessed the ball on the left side of the 18-yard box and stung a ball into the upper corner to end the match in the 97th minute.

Harmon ended with six saves in the match. Shots for the Cougars came from Hammond, Chris Goers, Mo Hoefs, and Carter Watkinson.

Minnesota Morris wraps up the weekend tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff against North Central University in Minneapolis.
