Martin Luther Runs Past Cougars, 39-0

The Knights scampered for nearly 300 yards on the ground and limited the Cougars to less than 200 yards of total offense on the day.

NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris football team saw its four-game winning streak come to a halt on Saturday with a 39-0 loss to Martin Luther College. The Cougars fall to 4-4 (3-1 UMAC) on the season.

Martin Luther was effective through the air and on the ground, but it was the ground game that really hurt Minnesota Morris on Saturday. The Knights had 293 yards rushing on 53 carries, with Carson Oestreich alone accounting for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Oestreich opened the scoring with three minutes elapsed on a 56-yard touchdown run to put Martin Luther ahead, 7-0.

Early on in the second quarter a lengthy punt return set up Martin Luther with the ball at the Minnesota Morris 10-yard line and they ran it in two plays later for a 14-0 lead. The Knights then hit on their lone passing touchdown of the game later in the quarter to take a 21-0 advantage. The Cougars embarked on a long drive late in the first half that milked over six minutes off the clock, but Martin Luther's defense stood firm in the red zone and a 28-yard field goal was missed with seconds left to keep UMN Morris off the scoreboard.

Receiving the opening kickoff for the second half, Martin Luther scored on that drive and each of the next two drives after it to increase the lead to 39-0. Minnesota Morris had drives in the fourth quarter that ventured into Knight territory, but the Cougars were unable to cash in on any of them.

Marcus Reeb was 9-of-21 for 58 yards through the air. Garrett Elison was the leading rusher for the Cougars with 43 yards on 10 carries. Branden Carlson had three catches for 29 yards. Tayven Penninger led the defense with eight tackles (seven solo).

Minnesota Morris closes out its home schedule next weekend with Senior Night under the Big Cat Stadium lights. The Cougars will host the University of Northwestern starting at 6 p.m.
