Bethany Lutheran Rallies Past Women’s Soccer, 2-1

Minnesota Morris opened the scoring in the seventh minute but couldn’t hang on.

MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 on Saturday to Bethany Lutheran College to halt a three-match winning streak. The Cougars drop to 6-10-0 (6-5-0 UMAC) on the year.

Minnesota Morris got things going early on, taking the lead in the seventh minute. Monica Calderon headed in her team-leading ninth goal of the season on a free kick from Shannon Young to put the Cougars on top.

Bethany Lutheran tied the score in the 24th minute as Ashley Casper crossed the ball into the box and Noa Txintxurreta finished it off to level things up.

The go-ahead goal for the Vikings was scored in the 40th minute as play proceeded despite the Cougars having a player down with an injury. Lexi Kaufman was eventually able to put the ball away on an assist from Maddie Perry to make it 2-1.

The Cougars had an excellent chance to tie the match up midway through the second half, but Calderon was denied by the crossbar. UMN Morris had one other shot on goal after that, but Jay Kwateh's effort was saved by Zoe Kinakin.

Bernadette Cienik made five saves in the match for Minnesota Morris. Calderon led the team with three shots.

These same two teams will quickly see each other again as they play a make-up match for a postponed date from earlier this month. The Cougars will host the Vikings on Monday night at Big Cat Stadium starting at 6 p.m.
