Men’s Soccer Closes Season with Hard-Fought Draw against Northland

Preston Wachter scored early for the Cougars, but Northland equalized on a second-half penalty kick and neither team could finish it off from there.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris wrapped up its 2021 season on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Northland College at Cougar Field. An electric run from Preston Wachter through the LumberJack defense opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Northland answered with a penalty kick in the second half and things stayed level the rest of the way. Minnesota Morris closes out the season with a record of 5-13-2 (5-7-2 UMAC).

As temperatures fell and the wind rose, the match became a test of wills as much as anything else. Minnesota Morris started out aggressively and Carter Watkinson was credited with four shots in the first five minutes, including two that required saves from Jamie Colvill. Wachter then put the Cougars on the board in the 12th minute as he collected a sloppy turnover from Northland, passed ahead to Carver Hammond while continuing his run, and then turned on the afterburners to scorch the LumberJacks as he picked up the ball in the box and deftly put it away to give Minnesota Morris a 1-0 lead.

With the wind favoring the team traveling towards the south goal, Northland picked up the pace in the second half and kept Minnesota Morris pinned back. Isaac Kauffman made a nice defensive stop of a shot in the 65th minute, but he was then unfortunately called for a hand ball on the very edge of the area two minutes later. Lee Dennis converted the penalty for the LumberJacks to knot the score up at 1-1.

In the final minutes of regulation, Corbin McCall drew a penalty for Minnesota Morris with about six minutes remaining. Colvill was able to make the save of McCall's penalty to keep things level and the match went to an extra session.

The first overtime produced a single shot on target, an effort from Hammond that was saved by Colvill. The second session was more of the same. Minnesota Morris had the only shot on target, but Mayson Palen's shot on goal was saved by Colvill to preserve the draw.

Lucas Harmon finished the day with five saves in goal for Minnesota Morris. Watkinson had eight shots (five on goal), with four shots for Palen and two for Hammond.
