MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team was kept on its toes by a Martin Luther College squad featuring some good attacking talent, but the Cougars responded after going a goal down midway through the first half and earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Knights on Saturday at Cougar Field.
Lucas Martin started the scoring in the 23rd minute with his eighth goal of the campaign for Martin Luther. All Martin had to do was redirect the ball after a square ball from Jed Mittelstadt from the right wing unlocked the Minnesota Morris defense and made it 1-0.
The Cougars came back to tie the match in the 36th minute with a golazo finish from
Tristan Cruz to make it 1-1.
Luke Wicklund and
Tommy Ellis worked hard on the right wing to retain possession against the physical play of the Martin Luther back line. A cross was then whipped in from the right and Cruz took the ball out of the air, scoring with his right foot past a helpless Adam Rosenbaum to even things up at 1-1. The match headed to halftime tied, but not before a shot from Martin Luther's Clay Hirsch pinged off the crossbar in the final minute of the half.
The Knights still had plenty of life in them after halftime and it took a save from defender
Preston Wachter off the goal line to deny Isaias Santos a goal in the 50th minute. The deadlock was broken by
Mayson Palen in the 73rd minute with a flying header on the edge of the six-yard box on a cross from
Carver Hammond.
With Martin Luther beginning to get stretched as the Knights searched for a tying goal, Minnesota Morris put the match to bed with a goal from
Carter Watkinson in the 84th minute. Watkinson finished smartly past Rosenbaum after receiving a nice pass through the heart of midfield from
Tad Fugitt and finishing low and left just past the reach of the MLC keeper.
Lucas Harmon earned the win in goal for UMN Morris, making three saves. Cruz ended the match with four shots, while Palen and Watkinson had three apiece.
Minnesota Morris wraps up a three-match home stand on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Crown College at 3:30 p.m.
