MAYVILLE, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team fell behind quickly on Tuesday night at Mayville State University, never leading in a 74-34 loss to the Comets.

After winning the opening tip, Mayville State missed but secured its own rebound and went on top, 2-0. Both offenses went missing after that as neither team connected on a field goal for nearly three minutes. Once the Comets got back on track, they proved to be hard to slow down. A flurry of three-pointers grew the lead for Mayville State up to 20-0 before Tariq Brownotter put the Cougars on the board. The first quarter ended with the Comets ahead, 28-2.

Though Jay Kwateh opened the scoring in the second quarter, Minnesota Morris wasn't able to cut into the lead. A pair of shots from Justine Day midway through the quarter left the score at 32-8, but Mayville State increased its edge to 39-10 at the half.

The Comets came out in the third quarter and scored the first 16 points to build an insurmountable lead. A late three-point play from Ella Van Kempen made it 59-19 heading into the final frame. The teams played to a 15-15 stalemate over the final 10 minutes to keep Mayville State's 40-point margin intact at the final horn.

Brownotter finished with a team-best seven points on the night. Day added six and Van Kempen had five.

Minnesota Morris will now host Mayville State back at Jim Gremmels Court on Nov. 30 starting at 7 p.m.
