MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team gave Mayville State a hard fight on Tuesday night at Jim Gremmels Court before falling, 68-57. Coming off a 40-point loss to the Comets a week ago and trailing 13-0 out of the gates, the Cougars never quit and made the visitors work for everything they got the rest of the way.

There seemed to be a lid on the basket for the opening seven minutes of the contest as Mayville State built a quick double-digit lead on Minnesota Morris. The Cougars missed their first nine shots of the night before Haley Wollschlager pulled up in transition and hit her only shot attempt of the night to make it 13-2. After that frigid start to the game, UMN Morris heated up quickly and made five of its last seven shots of the first quarter, including a banked-in three from Lexus Eagle Chasing to bring the opening frame to a close with the Cougars down by only five, 18-13.

Mayville State put together a solid second quarter to stem the tide and take its lead back to double-figures at the intermission, 33-23. Minnesota Morris refused to go away, pulling back within five with three minutes to play in the third quarter on a steal and breakaway layup from Eagle Chasing to cut it to 38-33. The Comet lead was still only six when they were able to connect on a pair of late three-pointers, including one at the buzzer, to take a 47-35 edge heading into the final quarter.

The two sides traded bucket after bucket in the early going of the fourth quarter. The deficit was just eight for Minnesota Morris midway through the quarter when Mayville State went on an 8-0 run in two minutes that essentially sealed it. Though the Cougars again rallied within eight, 64-56, there were less than two minutes remaining and Mayville State put the game to bed with a pair of free throws.

Eagle Chasing led all scorers in the game with 24 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals. Ella Van Kempen had some impressive paint finishes to end with 10 points. Jay Kwateh had six points, as did Malory Anderson along with five boards.

Minnesota Morris heads to Madison, S.D. on Thursday night to face Dakota State University at 6 p.m.
