Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bethany Lutheran Dominates the Paint in Victory over Women’s Basketball

The Vikings had a +18 rebounding edge and outscored the Cougars by a 46-14 margin in the paint.

MANKATO, Minn. – With only Lexus Eagle Chasing reaching double-digits in scoring on Saturday and Bethany Lutheran College dominating the interior, the University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team fell behind early and could never claw their way back in, falling to the Vikings by a score of 82-56. The Cougars drop to 4-3 overall, with a 2-3 mark in the UMAC.

UMN Morris led only briefly in the contest, first on an opening layup from Eagle Chasing and moments later on a jumper from Jay Kwateh that made it 4-2. Bethany Lutheran reeled off 10 straight points after that and led, 20-14, after the first quarter.

The Cougars struggled offensively in the second quarter, shooting just 4-of-16 (25%) from the field. A three-pointer from Eagle Chasing early on cut a 10-point deficit down to seven, but Bethany Lutheran responded immediately with a 9-0 run to push its lead to 33-17. Only the defense of the Cougars was able to keep them in it. A scoring drought of more than four minutes by the Vikings at the end of the half allowed Minnesota Morris to slice it 35-23 at halftime after late baskets from Kwateh and Malory Anderson.

Another big run from Bethany Lutheran in the third quarter effectively ended any hopes of a Minnesota Morris comeback. Trailing 51-33, the Cougars got back-to-back threes from Jadyn Sondrol and Lexie Winter to make it a 12-point game. The Vikings needed to stem the tide, so they went right inside to Hanna Geistfeld, who was fouled and made both free throws to kick-start a 10-0 burst that pushed BLC's lead to 61-39. The Cougars were unable to pull much closer the rest of the way as Bethany Lutheran cruised through the fourth quarter to get the win.

Geistfeld led all scorers with 26 points and had help from teammate Abby Olson, who ended with 20. Eagle Chasing scored 23 for the Cougars, but no other player for Minnesota Morris had more than six points on the afternoon. Anderson led all players in rebounds, ending with 11.

The Cougars wrap up the regular season a week from today, traveling to face the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a 3 p.m. tip-off on Feb. 27.
