MOORHEAD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team allowed Concordia College (MN) to jump ahead early and the Cobbers stymied the Cougar offense throughout most of the game in an 8-1 win on Friday afternoon.
A lead-off triple and a one-out sacrifice fly put Concordia ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Minnesota Morris starter
Brian Vanyo (0-2). The Cobbers put two more runs across in the bottom of the third and then scored three runs in the fourth inning, including a solo shot from Canaan Fagerland.
The lone run of the day for the Cougars came in the top of the sixth.
Alex Baumann was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and he moved to third on a single from
Logan Graves. With one down in the inning, a grounder from
Josh Doss brought Baumann in to momentarily make it 6-1.
Concordia had two insurance runs cross home plate in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a pair of Minnesota Morris errors. That increased the Cobber lead to 8-1 and the last hope for the Cougars was cut short when they left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth.
Graves and
Noah Kloss led the UMN Morris offense with a pair of hits apiece.
Rhys Morris worked in relief of Vanyo and gave up two runs, both unearned.
Cole Mammenga was perfect in the final 1.1 innings on the hill for the Cougars.
With tomorrow's doubleheader against North Central University postponed due to weather, the Cougars are next in action on April 7 at Martin Luther College. That doubleheader is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
