Softball’s Offense Stymied by Garcia, Northland

The Cougars managed only three hits in a doubleheader at Northland College on Thursday, held in check by Sofia Garcia in both games.

ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team couldn't string anything together on Thursday in a UMAC doubleheader at Northland College. Sofia Garcia got the wins in both contests for the LumberJills and held the Cougars to a combined three hits in the two contests. Northland took the first game, 7-0, and followed that up with a 1-0 victory. With those two losses, UMN Morris falls to 7-13 (3-3 UMAC) on the year.

Minnesota Morris returns home this weekend to face the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a conference doubleheader. The first pitch on April 17 is set for 1 p.m.

Game One: Northland 7, Minnesota Morris 0
Two big innings from the Northland offense proved to be the difference in the first game. The LumberJills scored two runs in the bottom of the second and then plated five in the bottom of the fifth as Garcia held Minnesota Morris to two hits in the first game of the day.

Two singles followed by a sacrifice fly put Northland ahead, 1-0, with one down in the second inning. A bases loaded single made it 2-0 before Tori Nichols-Kraft was able to leave the bags full to end the frame.

Other than an Eleanore Steinhouse walk in the top of the first, no runner reached base for Minnesota Morris until Lydia Mann had a two-out single in the third inning. That didn't lead to anything further for the Cougar offense, while a lead-off double from Nichols-Kraft in the fourth also failed to produce any runs.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Northland brought another run home on a sac fly to make it a 3-0 game. With two down in the inning and the bases loaded, a bases-clearing double doubled the advantage to 6-0 and another RBI double followed for the final margin of 7-0.

Nichols-Kraft gave up two runs in 4.0 innings and was charged with the loss, falling to 0-3 on the year.

Game Two: Northland 1, Minnesota Morris 0
The lone run of the second game came in the bottom of the third inning for Northland. A lead-off single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and eventually a two-out RBI double to give the LumberJills a 1-0 lead. With Garcia dealing for a second straight game, that one-run lead held up all the way to the finish.

Though Northland made things hard on itself by committing four errors, Minnesota Morris could manage only a single hit against Garcia. That was an infield single by Nichols-Kraft that advanced Steinhouse to second after she had reached on an error. Though two runners were aboard with one out and a groundout by Autumn Theis advanced both up one station, Garcia got Morgan Mathews swinging to end the threat in the top of the sixth.

Mollie Dummer pitched well but was tagged with the loss for Minnesota Morris. Dummer (4-5) went 6.0 innings and struck out six while allowing five hits and the single run.
