MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fought back from a goal down on Saturday to tie the match with the University of Wisconsin-Superior midway through the second half, but the Yellow Jackets broke the deadlock minutes later and came away with a 2-1 victory. The Cougars fall to 3-2-0 (3-1-0 UMAC), while UW-Superior remains in first place at 5-0-0 (5-0-0 UMAC).
A turnover in midfield was quickly turned into a goal for UW-Superior in the 12th minute of the match. Niya Wilson and Olivia Harding worked the ball upfield before finding a cutting Annah Schussman who finished at a tough angle to make it 1-0. The Minnesota Morris defense worked hard throughout the half to eliminate chances for a speedy Yellow Jacket attack and the defense recorded a team save in the final minute of the first half to keep it as a one-goal game heading into the break.
Megan Tschida took over in goal in the second half and was called into action on a number of occasions to keep Minnesota Morris in it. The first great opportunity of the half for the Cougars came on the hour mark when a
Sam Tate corner kick found
Monica Calderon, but her header was sent just to the left of the post.
The resolve of the Cougars paid off in the 71st minute when
Harper Toward was able to spring Calderon down the left wing. Calderon doubled back and delivered an in-swinging cross which lofted over the UW-Superior defense to a waiting Tate who finished deftly to knot the match up at 1-1, scoring the first goal given up by the Yellow Jackets this season.
The Yellow Jackets rose to the challenge and it was a long-range effort from Kaitlyn Raisch that proved to be the difference. After Raisch had a long effort blocked, the ball came right back to her for a second chance. This time, her shot from well over 25 yards sailed high over the UMN Morris defense and floated over the outstretched hands of Tschida to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. UW-Superior pressed its advantage in the closing minutes and the Cougars could never muster much more offensively the rest of the way.
Tschida ended with five saves in her 45 minutes of action after
Bernadette Cienik started the match for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars will look to rebound on Monday night when they travel to face Bethany Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Mankato.
