Northwestern Pitching Silences Cougar Offense

Three Northwestern pitchers combined to limit the Cougars to eight hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team was unable to figure out the pitching staff of the University of Northwestern on Wednesday, dropping UMAC contests to the Eagles by scores of 8-2 and 8-0. The Cougars are now 5-11 (3-3 UMAC) on the year.

UMN Morris will continue UMAC play at home on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior at Chizek Field.

Game One: Northwestern 8, Minnesota Morris 2
Owen Boerema twirled a complete-game gem to lift the Eagles over Minnesota Morris in the first game of the day. Boerema struck out 11 and allowed only four hits over 9.0 innings to get the victory and improve to 3-0 on the year.

Minnesota Morris actually struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a Julien Shadle RBI single after Branden Carlson reached base via a walk.

Northwestern proceeded to score single runs against Minnesota Morris starter Nathen Carlin (1-2) in each of the next three innings before taking command with a three-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run homer from Sam Szymanski to go up, 6-1.

Though the Cougars would get one back in the bottom of the sixth on a Joe Pelle double and a RBI groundout from Alex Baumann, they couldn't sustain any rallies against Boerema and Northwestern tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth to put the game away.

Shadle was 2-for-3 at the plate for the contest. Carlin struck out five in 6.0 innings before giving way to Ryan Wilhelm, who allowed only a single hit over 2.0 innings of relief.

Game Two: Northwestern 8, Minnesota Morris 0
Bryce Crabb (4-3) was the second pitcher of the day to confound Cougar hitters, going 8.0 innings and striking out seven. Wyatt Morrell came on in the ninth and put Minnesota Morris down in order to complete the shutout.

Brian Vanyo (2-3) kept the game scoreless until the top of the fourth when Keegan Vercoe hit what turned into the game-winning home run, making it 1-0. Northwestern scored two more in the fifth inning and one in the sixth before Vanyo was lifted entering the seventh. The Eagles continued to pour it on with one run in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Vanyo struck out five and gave up eight hits in his 6.0 innings of work. Colin Lindgren pitched the seventh and gave up a run, while Cole Mammenga threw the final two innings for the Cougars. Josh Doss had half of Minnesota Morris' hits in the game, going 2-for-4.
