ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – Behind a hat trick from
Sam Tate, the University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team won their second match in three nights with a 4-2 victory at Crown College. The Cougars jump to 5-2-0 (5-1-0 UMAC) and are back in a tie for first place in the conference with two matches left in the regular season.
Minnesota Morris opened the scoring in the fifth minute, going end-to-end in a matter of seconds to take a 1-0 lead. A shot by Crown's Sidney Manske was cleared off the line by a Cougar defender and the ball ended up being controlled by
Monica Calderon who found an open
Harper Toward. Toward spotted Tate way up the field in an onside position and put a perfectly-weighted pass to her feet. Tate then lofted a shot over the out-of-position goalkeeper for the Storm to finish the counterattack.
The UMN Morris lead was doubled in the 15th minute as Calderon finished off a goal with an assist from Tate. Calderon controlled the ball just inside the 18-yard box, held off a defender, spun and finished low past Molly Schmitz for a 2-0 Cougar advantage.
Tate added her second goal of the night in the 36th minute, scoring from a tight angle to an open net off of an assist from
Lacey Keller, putting Minnesota Morris on top, 3-0. Crown added some intrigue to the match in the 40th minute, scoring off of a second opportunity after
Bernadette Cienik had made an initial save but failed to secure it.
It didn't take long after halftime for Minnesota Morris to regain a three-goal edge. Calderon was brought down in the penalty area and Tate finished off the hat trick in the 50th minute by converting the spot kick to make it 4-1. The Storm were able to pull one back in the closing minutes, but the clock favored the Cougars and they closed it out with the two-goal lead intact.
Tate ended with seven total shots in the match, five on target. Calderon had five shots with three on target. Cienik and
Megan Tschida combined for the win in goal, each making two saves on either side of halftime.
Minnesota Morris is back home at Big Cat Stadium on Saturday, hosting North Central University at 3:30 p.m.
