Men’s Soccer Falls in UMAC Tournament to Northwestern

Down two goals at the break, the Cougars were unable to come all the way back against the Eagles.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team had its 2020-21 season come to an end in the UMAC Tournament on Wednesday as the University of Northwestern held on for a 2-1 win.

The vast majority of the issues Minnesota Morris had on Wednesday were caused by Jonathan-Thomas Olsen. The freshman scored two goals in the first half, tallying in the 14th and 31st minutes, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes. The two shots mustered by the Cougars in the first half – courtesy of Carver Hammond and Shane McConahy – were saved by Austin Gunkel.

Minnesota Morris played more aggressively on the attack in the second half and were rewarded just before the hour mark on a goal from Carter Watkinson. McConahy and Corbin McCall had the assists on the goal. Though 30 minutes remained to find an equalizer, Northwestern locked down from there and allowed only a pair of shots from the Cougars the rest of the way. Attempts from McCall and Carson Friestad were both saved by Gunkel to preserve UNW's one-goal margin.

In his final action in goal for the Cougars, Jake Peterson made four saves.

With the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds opting out of the UMAC Tournament, Minnesota Morris will not have an opponent to play on Saturday on the remaining matchday of the tournament. The Cougars wrap up their season with an overall record of 3-5-1.
