SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 in the UMAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday to the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Cougars will head into the third-place match on Saturday with an overall record of 6-4-0 on the season.
Early shots in the match from
Hannah Pedderson and
Sam Tate were saved by UW-Superior goalkeeper Morgan Philliber. The Yellowjackets then took the lead in the 19th minute with a goal from Niya Wilson. The Cougars very nearly went to the half down just the single goal, but UW-Superior added a tally from Annah Schussman in the 44th minute to nab a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
The second half featured end-to-end action with plenty of shots from both sides, but the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets nearly up to the end. In the 87th minute, the Cougars broke through with Tate assisting
Monica Calderon to make it 2-1. Time was on the side of the home team however, and Minnesota Morris was unable to put another shot on target in the match.
Calderon ended with four shots in the match, while Tate added three.
Bernadette Cienik made nine saves between the posts for the Cougars.
With a different format in place for this out-of-the-ordinary soccer season, the UMAC will have a third-place match for the two losing teams in the semifinals. As the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Minnesota Morris will host No. 4 seed University of Northwestern at Big Cat Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. to wrap up the 2020-21 season.
