DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team couldn't keep up with the potent offense of the College of St. Scholastica, dropping ballgames to the Saints by scores of 13-2 and 16-0.
Minnesota Morris comes home for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon against Hamline University. Senior Day for the Cougars gets started at 2 p.m., with the ceremony slated for in between games of the two 7-inning contests.
Game One: St. Scholastica 13, Minnesota Morris 2
St. Scholastica jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning and four in the second, opening up a 7-0 lead that Minnesota Morris could never recover from.
Brian Vanyo (2-5) suffered the loss, going 5.0 innings and giving up seven hits. Five Cougar errors hurt their chances as the Saints were able to score four unearned runs in the game.
After going down, 7-0, Minnesota Morris scored once in both the third and fourth innings.
Josh Doss led off the third with a triple and then scored on a RBI groundout from
Tyler Rowland. In the fourth, the Cougars took advantage of a CSS error.
Joe Pelle reached because of a poor throw and then stole second, putting himself in position to score when
Julien Shadle delivered a two-out single.
The score stayed 7-2 until the bottom of the sixth, but five St. Scholastica hits and a Cougar error all combined to allow six runs to score for the Saints. Minnesota Morris wasn't able to answer in the top of the seventh, bringing the game to a close.
Game Two: St. Scholastica 16, Minnesota Morris 0
The Saints scored in all six turns they had at the dish, steadily building a lead throughout the game before blowing it open with a seven-run fifth inning. Minnesota Morris had just five hits in the game compared to 21 for St. Scholastica.
Nathen Carlin (1-5) was charged with the loss. He went 4.0 innings, with the Saints collecting one run in the first and third innings, and two in both the second and fourth. Things went south in the fifth against relief pitcher
Colin Lindgren St. Scholastica put up seven runs and then three more in the sixth inning. The Cougars were never able to advance a runner past second in the game against five St. Scholastica pitchers who combined for the shutout.
