Concordia Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Cougars in Opener

Up a goal at halftime, the Cobbers scored in the first minute of the second half and added three more after that.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team battled on Wednesday in the team's season opener, but the firepower of the Concordia College (MN) offensive attack was too much to overcome as the Cobbers earned a 5-1 victory.

Minnesota Morris held off Concordia for the opening half-hour, but the deadlock was broken by a well-placed shot from Telvin Vah in the 33rd minute. Vah's shot from the edge of the 18-yard box was perfectly placed into the left corner to beat Lucas Harmon for a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half, the Cobbers extended their lead off some sloppy defending from the Cougars. A bounding ball in the penalty area was controlled by Albara Mutleq and he left Harmon with no chance, scoring in the 46th minute to double the lead.

Three goals in less than three minutes put the match away late. Nate Weaver converted a penalty in the 74th minute. Moments later it was Mason Weigel finishing from a tight angle in the 75th minute. Michael Matthews finished the flurry with a volley in the 77th minute.

The Cougars denied the Cobbers a shutout in the 82nd minute when a hustling Tommy Ellis deflected a pass attempt from Concordia keeper Noah Sahr into the net.

Other shot attempts in the match for UMN Morris came from Chris Goers and Carson Friestad. Harmon ended the match with four saves.

Minnesota Morris continues an opening three-match home stand on Friday, hosting Bethel University at 4 p.m.
