MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the University of Northwestern on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars now stand at 1-9-4 (1-4-4 UMAC) on the season.
The Eagles had a big advantage in shots in the first half, but solid defense from Minnesota Morris blocked a number of those attempts and
Lucas Harmon was there for the rest. Four saves from Harmon kept the match at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
The Cougars grew into the match in the second half and took the lead in the 55th minute as
Carter Watkinson's cross from the right wing connected with
Jacob Lee for a close-range finish to make it 1-0.
Northwestern nearly tied the match in the 72nd minute, but Harmon denied Jonathan-Thomas Olsen as the Eagle forward was in on goal. The deflection stayed with Olsen, but the Cougar defense was in the right spot to clear his second attempt off the line.
Minnesota Morris could do nothing about the Northwestern goal two minutes later. Olsen carried the ball through midfield and found Nathan Martinez on the left side of the penalty area. Martinez nicely bent a shot into the right corner past a diving Harmon to tie the score at 1-1. The Cougars had a couple of chances late but a Watkinson shot was saved in the 80th minute and a
Tristan Cruz shot in the 87th minute was wide.
Harmon finished the afternoon with seven saves. Watkinson had three shots to lead the line for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris is back home on Saturday afternoon, hosting North Central University at 1 p.m.
