ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team was held to just three shots on goal and Northland College scored twice off of set pieces in a 3-0 victory on Saturday. The Cougars end the 2022 season with a record of 3-11-5 (3-6-5 UMAC).
Northland had more possession throughout much of the first half and finally converted that into a goal in the 26th minute as Gregorio Garcia Espil powered one in from the left edge of the 18-yard box.
Minnesota Morris began to assert itself more going forward in the later stages of the half and
Carter Watkinson sent three shots in on goal, one of which clipped the post. However, in the final two minutes before halftime, the LumberJacks made it 2-0 with a great curling free kick over the wall from Kellen Richardson.
Chances for either side were few and far between in the second half before Northland scored in the 82nd minute to put the match away. Another good free kick from the LumberJacks was saved by
Lucas Harmon, but a rebound from Nolan Melek left Harmon with no chance as the lead extended to 3-0. Minnesota Morris took three shots in the second half, but none of them challenged a Northland keeper.
Watkinson finished with three shots (all on goal).
Carver Hammond and
Micah Winningham each took two shots on the night as well. Harmon finished with five saves in his final action in goal for the Cougars.
