Volleyball Sweeps Northland on Senior Day

The Cougars ran their winning streak to five matches on Saturday to close out the regular season.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) victory over Northland College on Senior Day at James Gremmels Court. The win puts the Cougars at 13-12 (10-4 UMAC) heading into the UMAC Tournament.

In the opening set, Minnesota Morris raced out to a 14-8 lead before a Northland rally brought the score level at 15-15. From there, a pair of Laura Wellbrock kills gave the lead back to the Cougars and Anna Molstad caught fire down the stretch to pull away for the 1-0 advantage on the day.

The Cougars had an easier time of it in the second set. Already up by four, 13-9, Minnesota Morris scored six straight as the errors piled up from the Northland side. The LumberJills committed 13 attack errors in the set and hit -.087 as a team. The Cougars had only eight kills in the set, but committed just a single attack error and cruised to the win to make it 2-0.

The third set was more of the same as Northland committed another 10 attack errors. The Cougar offense went for 13 kills in the set, taking a 5-1 lead and never looking back. A Molstad kill pushed the UMN Morris edge to as high as nine points, 20-11, before a LumberJill comeback attempt. Northland got within five, 22-17, but followed with three consecutive attack errors as Minnesota Morris completed the sweep.

Molstad led a balanced offensive effort for Minnesota Morris with eight kills. Maggie Jones and McKenzie Newton each finished with five on the day. Newton added 20 assists and nine digs. After becoming the all-time leader in digs at Minnesota Morris on Friday night, Alyssa Ukestad tacked on a team-high 17 on Saturday.

Minnesota Morris carries the No. 3 seed into the UMAC Tournament and will travel to Superior, Wis. on Wednesday night to battle the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 7 p.m.
