ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team finished their 2022 season on a high note, defeating Northland College by a score of 3-0. The win for the Cougars denied the LumberJills a spot in the UMAC Tournament and puts UMN Morris at 4-12-3 (4-7-3 UMAC) to end the season.
The scoring began in the 19th minute as
Kim Peters finished off a corner kick from
Maddie Schneider that took a touch from
Monica Calderon before finally getting past Northland keeper Elysabeth Lough.
Less than five minutes later, Minnesota Morris doubled its lead to 2-0.
Matteya Borah had time in midfield to find
Bella Toth and the freshman smashed home a shot from outside the 18-yard box in the 24th minute.
Toth wasn't done. In the 41st minute, her second of the night was the result of a hustle play from Peters to keep the Cougars in possession and then a well-delivered pass from Calderon as Toth made her run upfield. Again from outside the box, Toth smoked a ball into the corner of the goal to give Minnesota Morris a 3-0 cushion at the break.
A shot from Toth in the 52nd minute was saved by Lough to deny the freshman a hat trick and
Ayla Wicklow later had a shot saved by Lough as well. On the other side of the field,
Bernadette Cienik made two saves in each half to pick up the shutout.
Minnesota Morris finished with a 13-8 edge in total shots in the match. Toth accounted for six, with four on target. Peters had three shots and Calderon added two.
