MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team came within two minutes of pulling off a win that would have resonated around the UMAC before Bethany Lutheran College managed to pull even in the 89th minute on Wednesday. The 1-1 tie puts the Cougars at 0-9-3 (0-4-3 UMAC), while Bethany Lutheran moves to 7-2-3 (4-1-1 UMAC).
The play of Minnesota Morris goalkeeper
Lucas Harmon kept the Cougars in the match all night, but never moreso than in the first half. In an opening 45 minutes that saw UMN Morris attempt only one shot, the Vikings peppered Harmon with 17 shots, nine of which were on target for Harmon to save. In one flurry of action in the 15th minute, Harmon saved a shot from Ben Klausen and then the defense came up with a team save to clear a ball off the line. Two minutes later, Antonio Lima hit the left post. Chances somewhat fizzled out for Bethany Lutheran late in the half and the match went to halftime scoreless.
Minnesota Morris jolted the match to life in the 50th minute with a counterattack goal from
Carver Hammond. A Bethany Lutheran turnover fell to
Carter Watkinson and he pushed ahead toward Hammond who beat the Viking defense to get into a one-on-one with the keeper before putting it away to give the Cougars the lead.
Bethany Lutheran was unable to create as many chances in the second half, but with time winding down the Vikings began to push for the equalizer. Harmon made six saves in the second half with three coming inside of six minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Cougars, two of those saves in the closing stretch still weren't enough to keep BLC from knotting the score up. Inside of two minutes, a corner kick resulted in shots from Liam Peterson and Danny Pilot that Harmon stopped, but the ball was still loose and Pilot belted it home from the doorstep to tie things up.
Harmon finished the evening with 14 saves. Hammond and Watkinson combined for four shots in the match, with
Cooper Jones attempting the other in the match for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris will be back on the field on Saturday afternoon to take on Martin Luther College in New Ulm beginning at 4:30 p.m.
