NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon after the Knights were awarded a penalty kick in the final five minutes. The tie leaves UMN Morris at 2-7-3 (2-3-3 UMAC) on the season.
The scoring began in the 16th minute when
Jadyn Sondrol sent in a low cross that was pushed out to the top of the box.
Kim Peters gathered, spun, and fired home to give Minnesota Morris a 1-0 edge that lasted to halftime thanks to four saves from
Bernadette Cienik.
A second goal for Peters and the Cougars came in the 58th minute when Minnesota Morris took possession after a Martin Luther goal kick and quickly sent it back the other direction with
Monica Calderon feeding Peters to finish from the left side of the box.
The two-goal advantage lasted less than five minutes before Martin Luther made it 2-1 on a corner kick that Minnesota Morris failed to clear. The Cougar lead made it almost all the way to the finish before a hand ball was spotted in penalty area in the 86th minute and Kaitlin Butler scored her second goal of the match on a penalty kick to level the proceedings.
Peters finished the day with three shots (two on target).
Taylor Prieve had two shots (one on target), while
Matteya Borah and
Sofia Montoya each added one shot.
Minnesota Morris is back at Cougar Field on Oct. 13 to host the University of Northwestern at 3:30 p.m.
