Women’s Basketball Falls in Road Matchup at Mayville State

The Comets held the Cougars scoreless for more than six minutes in the third quarter to build the lead.

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team dropped a 74-45 decision to Mayville State University on the road on Tuesday night. The Cougars struggled to contain Mayville State's duo of Erin Walcker (26 points) and Jordan Zrust (18 points and 17 rebounds) as the loss sent UMN Morris to 0-5 on the season.

The lone Minnesota Morris lead of the night came on the first possession of the game when Malory Anderson was fouled by Walcker and made a free throw. The Comets then went on a 6-0 run and ended the quarter with a 21-9 lead despite a layup from Anderson just before the buzzer.

After a three-pointer from Walcker to start the second quarter, Minnesota Morris went on a 7-0 run with a jumper from Jay Kwateh and then five straight points from Jadyn Sondrol. A three-pointer from Haley Wollschlager brought the Cougars within six points late in the half and a Shelby Mortenson bucket in the final minute had Minnesota Morris heading into the break down just seven, 36-29.

The decisive run came early in the third quarter. Reece Wassink began the scoring in the second half with a free throw to make it 36-30, but Mayville State then went on a 17-0 run as Minnesota Morris went more than six minutes without scoring. A Zrust triple ended the quarter to put the Comets ahead, 58-37. Walcker began the fourth quarter with another three-pointer and the MSU lead never fell below 20 points in the final frame.

Sondrol finished the evening with a team-high 10 points. Anderson had nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kwateh spurred the defensive effort with three steals, while Alice Wilkinson had four assists.

Mayville State makes the return trip to Morris next Tuesday, Nov. 29, to face the Cougars at James Gremmels Court starting at 6 p.m.
