ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team fell in its return to the diamond on Wednesday, dropping a 15-3 decision to Crown College. Though the game was on Crown's home field, it was a "home game" for the Cougars in an effort to get a game played at a point in which UMN Morris hadn't taken the field in 10 days.
Trouble started with the first batter of the game for Minnesota Morris. With Crown at the plate in the top of the first, Mason Brock led off with a double and that was followed by a triple from Seth Betts to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Kyle Schroedle homered to give the Storm a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Crown had a pair of runners aboard when Betts hit a three-run homer over the short fence in right field to give the Storm a 6-0 edge. In the top of the third, Crown added onto its lead with solo home runs from Alejandro Molina and Brock to make it 8-0 before Ashton Long put a charge into one to increase the lead for the Storm to 10-0. Another solo shot, this one from Blake Boggs in the top of the fourth, made it 11-0.
Minnesota Morris got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Tyler Scheler worked a lead-off walk and
Noah Kloss kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single. With those two aboard,
Evan Benson hit one over the fence in right to slice it to 11-3 through four innings.
The Storm went back up by double-digits by scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth and again in the sixth to take a 15-3 lead. The Cougars needed at least three runs in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going, but Crown reliever Brett Sutter struck out the side to finish things off.
Scheler went 2-for-3 on the day out of the three-hole for Minnesota Morris.
Tyler Carper took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season.
The three-game series this weekend between Minnesota Morris and the University of Wisconsin-Superior has already been changed. The opening doubleheader on Friday is postponed with a make-up date yet to be announced. On Saturday, the Cougars and Yellowjackets will meet at 4 p.m. in Duluth's Wade Stadium for a single game.
