MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team dropped its final home non-conference match of the season on Saturday at Cougar Field, 2-0, to Hamline University.
Logan Weller made the difference on the afternoon, scoring both goals for the Pipers. It started in the second minute as Weller's initial shot was saved at close range from
Nick Isensee, but the follow-up dropped to his feet and he slid in and deposited it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
With pressure mounting on the Minnesota Morris defense, Weller scored again in the 17th minute, this time finishing a cross that came in from the right side courtesy of Robert Cooper.
There were plenty of chances each way after that, but both offenses were uncalibrated. Of seven shots in the match for Minnesota Morris, only two were on target. For Hamline, just six of its 23 shots were on frame. Weller alone took 10 shots and put shots on target just three times. The best chance for the Cougars to get back in it came late in the second half when
Carver Hammond found himself one-on-one with Hamline's keeper, but his attempt to go over the top of Luke Rimington sailed high over the goal.
Hammond finished with three shots in the match. The other shots for the Cougars came from
Jacob Lee, Ethan Pherson,
Carter Watkinson, and
Micah Winningham. Isensee finished with three saves and
Lucas Harmon had one.
Minnesota Morris begins UMAC play on Sept. 17, traveling to St. Bonifacius to take on Crown College at 7:30 p.m.
