ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Crown College on Saturday afternoon in each team's UMAC opener.
Crown took a stunning lead in the sixth minute as a Minnesota Morris foul led to a free kick that Ella Hollander booted into the upper corner of the goal from 40 yards out.
That 1-0 lead lasted until halftime, with Minnesota Morris nearly scoring the equalizer off a corner kick in the 15th minute. The Cougars had two shots saved within seconds before a third shot hit off the left post.
The Polars took most of their shots from well outside the penalty area, making things fairly routine for
Bernadette Cienik until Crown added onto its lead with a counterattack in the 68th minute finished off by Trinity Gregory.
Seeking a way back into the match, Minnesota Morris had to push numbers forward and Crown took advantage with goals in the 74th and 76th minutes to put the finishing touches on the win.
Cienik finished the day with eight saves.
Bella Toth registered a team-high three shots, two of which were on frame.
Matteya Borah had two shots, one on target.
Minnesota Morris heads to Minneapolis on Sept. 22 to take on North Central University at 1 p.m.
