SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team suffered a 3-0 sweep (23-25, 22-25, 21-25) at the hands of the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night. The loss sends the Cougars to 5-10 (2-2 UMAC) on the season.
Each set could have gone either way and no set was closer than the first. A three-point run from the Cougars that included two kills from
Laura Wellbrock put Minnesota Morris in front, 20-17, and the Cougars would maintain a two-point lead at 22-20. UW-Superior took over from there, however, scoring three in a row to take the lead before a
Lydia Nash kill knotted the score at 23-23. The next two points belonged to the Yellowjackets though, giving the home team a 1-0 edge.
Trailing by as many as five points in the middle of the second set, Minnesota Morris rallied back to get within a point at 20-19 after a
Maggie Jones kill. Just when the Cougars were looking to level the score, UW-Superior rattled off four straight to earn a set point. Though Minnesota Morris fought off three of those, the Yellowjackets eventually took the set and moved to a 2-0 lead on the night.
UW-Superior jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in the third set before Minnesota Morris fought all the way back to tie the set at 17-17. The Cougars then had kills from Wellbrock and
Anna Molstad to take a 19-18 edge on the Yellowjackets. Though it seemed that the momentum had turned, UW-Superior then took advantage of four straight attack errors from UMN Morris to go back in front, 22-19. The Yellowjackets finished things off by notching the final three points of the match to complete the sweep.
Wellbrock led Minnesota Morris with nine kills on the night while Molstad added eight.
McKenzie Newton had a solid all-around night with 24 assists, nine digs, and five kills.
Sydney Eckhoff finished with 13 digs and
Alyssa Ukestad added 12.
It's a quick turnaround for the Cougars as they now face Northland College on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Ashland, Wis.
