MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell to Concordia College (MN) on Wednesday by a score of 7-2. The Cobbers blazed out of the gates with four goals in the first 12 minutes to take command and never looked back.
The scoring opened with two goals for Concordia in the sixth minute – one from Amber Weiybe off a corner kick and then another from Grace Lawlor. Sophia Robinson made it 3-0 in the 10th minute and Lawlor's second goal of the afternoon made it 4-0 in the 12th minute.
Monica Calderon put the Cougars on the board in the 19th minute, controlling a lobbed pass from
Matteya Borah, shaking off a defender and firing past Concordia keeper Breanna Nelson. The three-goal deficit lasted only until the 22nd minute as Minnesota Morris was whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Lawlor's third goal came on the ensuing penalty kick. Clara Rooney added one last goal in the first half in the 37th minute to make it 6-1 at the break.
In the second half, Rooney netted her second goal in the 52nd minute for a 7-1 lead. Calderon answered back for the Cougars with her second tally of the day in the 56th minute, latching onto a ball played forward by
Harper Toward and beating Nelson for the final touch as the keeper closed down the space.
Bernadette Cienik made 11 saves on the afternoon. Calderon and Toward each finished with two shots apiece to lead the line for the offense.
Minnesota Morris will be back home on Sept. 13, hosting UW-River Falls at 3 p.m.
