MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team extended the match with Bethel University on Wednesday night, taking the third set from the Royals after going down, 2-0, but BU answered back to win the fourth set and take a 3-1 (19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 11-25) decision from the Cougars. UMN Morris is now 2-2 on the season.
A five-point run in the first set helped Bethel build an 11-5 lead on Minnesota Morris and the Royals were comfortably ahead most of the way until the Cougars rallied late. A pair of kills from
Lydia Nash kick-started a five-point run for the Cougars to cut it to 20-17 before Bethel was able to close it out for the 1-0 lead.
After a 3-0 start to the second set for Minnesota Morris, Bethel roared back to win 10 of the next 12 points and take a 10-5 advantage. The Cougars reeled off six straight points facing set point, but a kill from Bethel setter Hannah Wilhite finally closed it out for the Royals and gave them a 2-0 edge in the match.
Feeding off the boisterous crowd, Minnesota Morris clawed its way back into the third set after trailing, 4-1, and forced Bethel into a timeout after taking a 12-10 lead. Still ahead by two, 15-13, UMN Morris won five of the next six points, including a pair of kills from
Anna Molstad. Ahead by a score of 20-17, the Cougars and Royals proceeded to trade points the rest of the way, giving Minnesota Morris a 25-21 victory after another Molstad kill.
Maggie Jones began the fourth set with back-to-back kills and Nash added another for a 3-0 lead, but Bethel regrouped and scored six in a row to retake control of the match. The Cougars would get no closer than two points the rest of the way as the Royals pulled away in the late stages.Â
Molstad tallied a team-high 14 kills on the night. Both Nash and
Laura Wellbrock finished with nine kills apiece.
McKenzie Newton had 35 assists and nine digs.
Alyssa Ukestad led the back line with 15 digs, with Nash adding 11 and Wellbrock 10.Â
Minnesota Morris is back in action on Friday afternoon at the Augsburg University Invitational, facing the hosts at 2:30 p.m.
