MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team was victorious in its final home match of the season on Sunday. The Cougars controlled the proceedings from the opening minute and launched more than 50 total shots in a 7-0 win over Oak Hills Christian College.
Jacob Lee provided the difference in the opening 45 minutes for Minnesota Morris. Off a corner kick from
Carter Watkinson, Lee rose up above the crowd and nodded home in the third minute for what would turn out to be the winning goal. Off an Oak Hills Christian giveaway just a few minutes later, Lee slotted home in the 11th minute to make it 2-0. Though the Cougars continued to press for more, the Wolfpack were able to keep UMN Morris off the board the rest of the way in the first half.
Oak Hills Christian continued to stymie Minnesota Morris as the second half began despite the massive shots advantage from the Cougars.
Tristan Cruz had a shot cleared off the line by a Wolfpack defender 54th minute but then found the side netting in the 60th minute to put UMN Morris three goals clear. Things picked up from there for the Cougar offense.
Will Marsan put in a shot from distance in the 64th minute. That was followed by a headed goal from
Matt Gearou in the 73rd minute. Lee earned his hat trick in the 87th minute with another header off a Watkinson corner kick and Gearou's second goal of the afternoon finished things in the 88th minute.
Jay Clarksen was given the start and earned the shutout – the third straight for the Cougars – with three saves on the day. Lee finished with seven 'shots, as did
Burke Sheppard. Watkinson and
Dominik Cantu-Polster each had six shots, with five apiece from Marsan and
Gavin Tarbox.
Minnesota Morris concludes the 2023 season with a pair of road matches. First up is a meeting with North Central University on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Minneapolis.
