ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Minnesota Morris senior
Garrett Elison was named the UMAC Special Teams Performer of the Week on Monday following his kickoff-return touchdown on Saturday in a 34-13 road win at Westminster College.
After a deadlocked first quarter, Minnesota Morris had burst out to a 13-0 lead in the second but Westminster scored late in the frame to make it 13-7. Facing the possibility of being up just six heading into the break, Elison changed the momentum of the contest by taking the kickoff and finding a seam up the middle before breaking to the sideline and outrunning a Blue Jay defender in the final 15 yards to stake the Cougars to a 20-7 lead.
Elison's touchdown had the added benefit of putting Westminster back on offense. After the Minnesota Morris defense forced a three-and-out, a bad snap on the punt resulted in another Cougar score as
Sam Jordan pounced on the ball in the end zone to give UMN Morris a 27-7 lead at the half.
Defensively, Elison added two solo tackles and a pass breakup in the contest. He also had a 10-yard punt return.
Winners of four in a row, Minnesota Morris returns home to Big Cat Stadium on Saturday and will host Crown College at 1 p.m.
