ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris football team took home all three weekly awards from the UMAC on Monday as junior
Izayah Boss won Offensive Player of the Week, senior
Hunter Infanger won Defensive Player of the Week, and senior
Alex Happ won Special Teams Player of the Week. Each of these three players played critical roles in the 42-39 Minnesota Morris victory on Saturday that clinched a UMAC title for the Cougars for the first time since 2006.
Boss took home offensive honors after rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries. Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, a 68-yard touchdown run from Boss gave the Cougars some life and he later added a touchdown in the third quarter that increased the Minnesota Morris lead to 29-21.
Infanger was everywhere on defense for the Cougars, finishing the day with 11 tackles (six solo). One of those tackles was in the end zone to pull Minnesota Morris to within 21-9 in the second quarter. He would later force a fumble that was recovered by
Alex Emmrich and led to another Cougar touchdown. In the final seconds of the game, Infanger broke up a pass intended for Beau Burk in the end zone that would have won the game for Northwestern. Juan Garza intercepted a pass on the next play to seal the Cougar victory.
Finally, Happ was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points and 2-for-2 on field goals. He connected on a 25-yarder in the third quarter that knotted the game up at 32-32 entering the final 15 minutes of action. With less than five minutes remaining, his career-long 42-yarder provided the final margin of victory as he broke a 39-39 tie.
Minnesota Morris heads into the NCAA Division III Playoffs next weekend and will battle the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Nov. 18 starting at 12 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.
