Ri-Dak-ulous Win for Men’s Basketball at Wartburg

After scoring a career-high 31 on Tuesday night against Augsburg, Pal Dak netted 40 points on Saturday at Wartburg College.

WAVERLY, Iowa – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team had a successful second day at the Buzz Levick Tournament on Saturday, posting a 90-63 win over the hosts, Wartburg College. The Cougars improve to 3-2 overall on the season.

The story of the game would turn out to be Pal Dak, but the senior guard scored 29 of his 40 points in the second half. The Cougars were balanced in the early going. After trailing, 3-0, Minnesota Morris went on an 8-0 run with treys from Jarrett Kujava and Dak, plus a lay-in from Kenny Placide. That lead would build and hold up the rest of the afternoon. Wartburg scored four straight points to cut its deficit to 8-7, but Minnesota Morris answered with a 10-0 run to go up by double-digits. The halftime lead was 41-25 after a late Kujava triple.

The second half belonged to Dak. Wartburg started off on a 7-0 run and ultimately pulled within four points of Minnesota Morris, but Dak proved to be unstoppable and helped keep the Cougars out in front. With the score 50-46, Minnesota Morris went on an 11-0 run at the midway point of the half and the lead never dipped into single digits again. Dak accounted for 12 points in a 14-0 run later in the half as the Cougars put the game away.

The 40 points scored by Dak on Saturday represent the third-most scored by a Cougar in a single game in program history, while his 17 field goals are the second-most by a Minnesota Morris player in a single game.

Kujava also reached double-digits with 13 points, while Gus Gunderson and Blake Munson had nine apiece. Kenny Placide approached a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Dak and Kujava were named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of Saturday's action.

Non-conference play continues for Minnesota Morris on Tuesday night with a trip to Mayville State University for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
