Cougar Football Puts Three on All-Region Team

Christian Diederich became the first player in program history to earn First Team All-Region honors on Tuesday.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris football team had three players named to the D3Football.com All-Region 6 team on Tuesday. Offensive lineman Christian Diederich was the first player in program history to make the All-Region First Team, while running back Izayah Boss and defensive lineman Chayce Meyer repeated as Third Team selections for the second year in a row.

Diederich, a senior from Murdock, Minn., was named the 2023 UMAC Lineman of the Year and First Team All-UMAC at the conclusion of the regular season. Protecting quarterback Marcus Reeb's blind side, Diederich did not allow a sack on the season and the Cougars gave up just two in five UMAC games. The Cougars also finished second in the conference with 205.6 rushing yards per contest and third in total yards per game with 357.9 per game.

Boss, a junior from Bothell, Wash., was a vital cog in a potent Minnesota Morris offense that led the UMAC with an average of 33.9 points per game. Boss – another First Team All-UMAC selection – finished second in the conference in rushing yards with 892 on only 126 carries, an average of 7.1 per carry. His big-play ability also led to 13 rushing touchdowns on the season and he had three carries of more than 60 yards.

Meyer, a sophomore from Osakis, Minn., was the UMAC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-UMAC selection for the second season in a row. Meyer totaled 50 tackles on the season (25 solo), while setting a program single-season record and leading the UMAC with 20.0 tackles for a loss. Of those 20.0 tackles for a loss, 9.0 were sacks as he was second in the conference in that category as well.

With the contributions of these three leading the way, Minnesota Morris won its first UMAC title since 2006 and made its first postseason appearance since 1981, finishing the 2023 season with an overall record of 7-4 and a 5-0 mark in the UMAC.
