SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team stayed undefeated in UMAC play with a second road win in as many days, downing the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 65-63. The Cougars now sit at 6-4 (2-0 UMAC) for the season.
UW-Superior threatened to blow open the game early, taking an immediate 7-0 lead and forcing a timeout from Minnesota Morris after less than two minutes. The Yellowjackets would maintain that lead the rest of the half, going on top by as many as 10 before settling for a 33-28 halftime edge.
A three-point play from
Gus Gunderson at the 14:25 mark of the second half gave Minnesota Morris its first tie of the game at 40-40. UW-Superior briefly regained the lead, but
Ian Fahje then gave the Cougars their first lead on a triple, making it 45-44 with 11 minutes remaining. After that, an 11-3 run from Minnesota Morris gave the team its largest lead of the afternoon, 56-47, with six minutes to play.
Missed free throws in the closing stages kept the door open for UW-Superior. J'Vaun Walker pulled the Yellowjackets within a bucket at the three-minute mark before a clutch three-point play from
Kenny Placide. With less than 15 seconds left, Walker once again gave UW-Superior life, hitting a short jumper to make it 64-63. The Cougars missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but this time the defense stood firm and denied Walker on a drive attempt.
Blake Munson grabbed the rebound and was fouled. The sophomore made one of two and the Yellowjackets had one last chance for a miracle win, but Walker's halfcourt heave was short, securing the two-point victory for Minnesota Morris.
Placide led the Cougars on the afternoon with 18 points and six rebounds. Gunderson added 16 points as the other Minnesota Morris player in double-figures.
Minnesota Morris is back in action on Monday night at James Gremmels Court, hosting Waldorf University in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:15 p.m.
